4×4 Road Trip Through Western Australia from Broome

This 4×4 crossing of Western Australia begins in the city of Perth. Your journey then heads north towards Geraldton, a historic coastal town, before continuing to the spectacular seaside cliffs of Kalbarri National Park.

The route continues towards Denham in the heart of the Shark Bay region, before reaching the underwater paradise of Coral Bay, famous for its coral reefs accessible directly from the beach. The adventure then turns inland towards the mining town of Tom Price, gateway to the breathtaking Karijini National Park, where ancient gorges and natural pools create some of the most spectacular landscapes in the country. The journey continues to Port Hedland, a major industrial port reflecting the raw power and scale of the region, before reaching the final destination: Broome.

Day 1

Departure on your international flight to Perth and its laid-back atmosphere, typical of Australia. Meals and overnight stay on board.

Please note: allow one or two additional days for international travel time to and from Australia. We will discuss this together when planning your itinerary.

Day 2 : Perth

Today, immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Perth as you collect your 4x4 and begin your Australian adventure. Start the day with a walk through the beautiful Kings Park, the city’s green oasis offering spectacular views over the skyline and the Swan River. Then head down to Elizabeth Quay, where you can stroll along the lively waterfront or even enjoy a cruise on the river. Continue towards Northbridge, Perth’s trendy district filled with cafés and restaurants. For shopping, explore Hay Street or Murray Street, or visit the fascinating Western Australian Museum.

To end the day, head to Cottesloe Beach for a magnificent sunset over the Indian Ocean.

Day 3 : Perth/Geraldton - 418 km

The journey from Perth to Geraldton offers the perfect first immersion into the landscapes of Western Australia. Leaving Perth behind, the road follows the spectacular coastline of the Indian Ocean along the scenic Indian Ocean Drive. After around 2.5 hours on the road, you’ll reach the extraordinary Pinnacles Desert in Nambung National Park. This iconic site reveals thousands of limestone formations rising dramatically from the golden sand, creating one of the country’s most unique landscapes.

The journey continues with the possibility of a scenic detour to North Head, where steep cliffs overlook the ocean and offer breathtaking panoramic views. Arrival in Geraldton at the end of the day allows time to discover this historic coastal town under the warm light of sunset.

Day 4 : Geraldton/Kalbarri - 165 km

The drive from Geraldton to Kalbarri takes around two hours via Northampton. Once in Kalbarri, Kalbarri National Park awaits with two very different areas to explore. Along the coast, discover spectacular cliffs and remarkable rock formations such as Natural Bridge and Island Rock.

Further inland, the dramatic gorges carved by the Murchison River offer breathtaking scenery, especially from the famous Nature's Window and the spectacular Kalbarri Skywalk platforms overlooking the canyon.

Day 5 : Kalbarri/Denham - 374 km

The journey towards Denham crosses landscapes that gradually shift from bushland to breathtaking coastal scenery. Your first stop is Hamelin Pool, home to the famous stromatolites, ancient living formations considered among the oldest evidence of life on Earth. Then continue to the extraordinary Shell Beach, where the shoreline is entirely made up of millions of tiny white shells stretching endlessly along the coast. Once in Denham, explore Francois Peron National Park by 4x4, where deep red earth contrasts spectacularly with turquoise ocean waters. Highlights include Skipjack Point for marine wildlife spotting and Cape Peron with its dramatic cliffs and coastal views.

The day ends in Monkey Mia, world-famous for its wild dolphins that have approached the shoreline almost every morning for more than 40 years. Be sure to arrive early tomorrow to witness this truly unique experience.

Day 6 : Denham/Coral Bay - 556 km

Today, head towards Coral Bay. Once there, Coral Bay reveals its true treasure: a coral reef accessible just a few steps from the beach. This small paradise, gateway to the spectacular Ningaloo Reef, offers the perfect opportunity to swim among tropical fish and sea turtles in crystal-clear waters.

The protected lagoon of Bill's Bay is ideal for snorkelling, while glass-bottom boat tours allow those who prefer to stay dry to admire the incredible underwater world from above.

Day 7 : Coral Bay/Tom Price - 547 km

Today, head inland towards Tom Price, leaving the coast behind as the landscapes gradually transform into the rugged beauty of the Outback.
Karijini National Park reveals some of the oldest rock formations on Earth, with spectacular gorges dating back more than 2.5 billion years. Discover deep canyons lined with red cliffs streaked with grey and purple tones, emerald natural pools and refreshing waterfalls hidden within the ancient landscape.
Highlights include Dales Gorge and the famous Fortescue Falls, along with Fern Pool and Circular Pool. Don’t miss the breathtaking Oxer Lookout, where four dramatic gorges converge into one unforgettable panorama.

Day 8 : Karijini National Park

Explore the incredible landscapes of Karijini National Park starting with the famous Dales Gorge, easily accessible from the main parking area. A scenic hike first leads to Fortescue Falls, the park’s only permanent waterfall, before continuing to Fern Pool, a sacred natural pool for Aboriginal communities where you can swim in crystal-clear waters. The trail then continues towards Circular Pool, surrounded by impressive red cliffs.

In the afternoon, head to the spectacular Oxer Lookout, offering breathtaking views over the meeting point of four deep gorges plunging more than 100 metres below. This area also features more adventurous hikes, including narrow passages winding directly between towering rock walls. End the day at Knox Lookout, where the sunset lights up the gorges in glowing shades of red and orange.

Please note: some trails are classified as Level 5 (difficult) and require a good level of fitness. Always follow local safety instructions carefully.

Day 9 : Karijini NP/PortHedland - 420 km

Today, head towards Port Hedland as the road crosses the vast landscapes of the Pilbara region. Port Hedland is home to the world’s largest iron ore export port, where gigantic bulk carriers, massive industrial facilities and the famous Australian “road trains” create a truly unique atmosphere. Long freight trains transporting iron ore regularly pass through the area, some stretching up to 2.5 kilometres in length.

Highlights include Redbank Bridge, one of the best spots to observe these legendary mining trains, as well as the Coastal Walk Trail, offering fascinating views over the port operations and coastline.

Day 10 : Port Hedland/Broome - 500 km

Today, head towards Broome, the final stage of your great journey across Western Australia. Broome welcomes you with the famous Cable Beach, a spectacular 22-kilometre stretch of white sand bordered by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. This iconic town of north-western Australia is shaped by a fascinating history linked to the pearl industry and the cultural mix between Aboriginal, Japanese, Malay and European communities.

Upon arrival, enjoy a walk along Cable Beach, especially at sunset when camels slowly cross the beach beneath the golden evening light. The historic district of Chinatown tells the story of Broome’s pearling heritage, while the famous natural phenomenon known as Staircase to the Moon (visible between April and October) creates a magical spectacle as the full moon reflects across the tidal flats at low tide.
