Horseback Expedition in the Mongolian Altai

Set off on a 9-day horseback adventure through the spectacular Mongolian Altai Mountains, where high mountain landscapes meet sacred valleys and ancient nomadic traditions. Starting from Ölgii, you’ll ride deep into Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, home to the legendary “Five Sacred Peaks”, rising above 4,000 metres. Explore the ancient glaciers of Potanin Glacier before following the shores of the crystal-clear Khoton Lake and Khurgan Lake, two stunning jewels nestled among the mountains.

Experience the rhythm of the endless steppes and the freedom of life on horseback.

Continue towards the remarkable archaeological site of Tsagaan Salaa Petroglyph Complex, a vast open-air museum featuring more than 10,000 petroglyphs that bear witness to thousands of years of human history. Between larch forests, alpine meadows and remote mountain valleys, you may encounter Golden Eagles soaring overhead and Argali Sheep roaming the surrounding slopes. Located near the borders of China and Russia, this preserved wilderness offers one of the most authentic and untouched landscapes on Earth. Throughout the journey, a camel caravan accompanies the expedition, providing a truly immersive experience into the traditional nomadic lifestyle of the Mongolian Altai.

Day 2 : Oulan-Bator/Olgii

In the morning, you will take a one-hour flight to western Mongolia. From the moment you land, you step into a world unlike any other, home to the legendary Kazakh eagle hunters and the majestic Altai Mountains.

Bordering China and Russia, this remote region is steeped in centuries-old nomadic traditions, where the art of hunting with golden eagles has been passed down through generations. Towering above the landscape, the snow-capped peaks of Altai Tavan Bogd, known as the “Five Sacred Mountains,” provide a spectacular backdrop for the horseback adventure ahead.

Overnight at the hotel.

3

Day 3 : Olgii/Tavan Bogd

After several hours travelling by 4x4 through spectacular landscapes, you will arrive at Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, a vast protected wilderness covering 6,362 km².

Here, your true immersion into Mongolia’s traditional nomadic way of life begins. You will be welcomed by local families who still live according to ancestral customs in their traditional gers (yurts). This first encounter with your nomadic hosts marks the start of a truly authentic cultural experience, offering a unique insight into their daily lives, traditions, and deep connection with the surrounding natural world.

Overnight in a traditional yurt.

4

Day 4 : Camp de base - 25 km

Your horseback adventure truly begins! After breakfast with your nomadic hosts, you will saddle up for your first 25 km ride through the breathtaking landscapes of the Altai Mountains. Your luggage will be transported by camels, accompanied by local herders throughout the journey.

Your destination is one of Mongolia’s most spectacular camping locations. From the base camp, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Altai range, including Mount Khuiten, the country's highest peak, and the impressive Potanin Glacier.

Overnight in a tent.

5

Day 5 : Camp de base/Vallée de la rivière blanche - 24 km

Today, you will spend around five hours in the saddle, following a lesser-known route to one of the park’s hidden gems: the White River Valley. This alternative trail offers stunning, off-the-beaten-path scenery and a deeper exploration of this remarkable wilderness.

Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the White River Valley takes its name from the river’s striking milky-white waters. This unique colour comes from fine mineral particles carried downstream by the meltwaters of the Potanin Glacier, creating a fascinating natural spectacle.

Overnight in a tent.

6

Day 6 : Vallée de la rivière blanche/Vallée Noire - 23 km

Today, you ride towards the remote Black Valley, home to the Tuvan nomads, a fascinating people who have preserved their language, traditions, and shamanic heritage for centuries in the heart of these sacred mountains.

You will be welcomed by a Tuvan family and enjoy a rare opportunity to experience their way of life firsthand. The women of the household may introduce you to their handmade crafts, including rugs, clothing, and everyday items created from the wool of their livestock using techniques passed down through generations.

These beautiful handcrafted pieces reflect a rich cultural heritage and offer a meaningful keepsake for those wishing to take home a small part of Mongolia’s nomadic traditions.

Overnight in a tent.

7

Day 7 : Vallée Noire/Vallée des Ours - 24 km

Today, you will cross Takhilt Pass, one of the highest and steepest points of the journey. For safety reasons, you will be asked to walk alongside your horse on the steepest sections of the trail.

Beyond the pass lies the remote Bear Valley, an untouched wilderness accessible only during the summer months, from mid-June to late August. This pristine valley is home to a variety of wildlife, including bears, deer, foxes, and wolves. While these animals inhabit the region year-round, they generally keep their distance from the trails during the summer season when travellers pass through the area.

Overnight in a tent.

8

Day 8 : Vallée des Ours/Lac de Khoton - 20 km

Heading towards Lake Khoton, you will enjoy a final horseback ride of around 3 to 4 hours before reaching the end of the valley, where our vehicle will be waiting. Here, you will say goodbye to your horses and the camel herders who have accompanied the expedition.

A scenic two-hour drive then takes you to the shores of Lake Khoton, where you can relax and soak in the peaceful surroundings. Those wishing to explore further can hike up Biluu Hill, home to remarkable Bronze Age petroglyphs that offer a fascinating glimpse into the region’s ancient past.
You will also have the opportunity to swim in the lake and enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful setting.

Overnight with a nomadic family.

9

Day 9 : Lac de Khoton/Cascade de Baga Turgen - 12 km

Today, you head towards one of the Altai’s most spectacular natural wonders: Turgen, located near the turquoise waters of Lakes Khoton and Khurgan.

The Baga Turgen Waterfall is a breathtaking sight, with two glacier-fed cascades tumbling down a 36-metre cliff, the main fall plunging 23 metres into the valley below. Protected by its remote borderland location, this unspoiled valley remains largely untouched and is home to a handful of historical remnants left behind by the region’s ancient nomadic civilizations.
